Admission is free, and the best times to visit are at sunset or sunrise because the colors of the sky make the view even more stunning. While sturdy shoes are required for the hike up to the top, this site is appropriate for all ages.

Waitakere Ranges Regional Park

This is a 20 mile ride out of town, but the 40,000-acre park is well worth the drive. This park runs along the west coast of the island and includes mountain hiking, black sand beach walking, and bird watching. The views are unique, and this park will take the better part of a day to explore. Older children may have more fun here, as traveling on foot is challenging.

Waiheke Island

This island is a short ferry or airplane ride away from Auckland. It hosts a number of stunning beaches, such as Oneroa, Palm, Blackpool, Surfdale, Onetagi, Cactus Bay, and Shelly Beach. Each one has its own personality. In addition, visitors may dive, surf, and sail. On the island proper are a local theater, musicians, and Maori cultural exhibits. Waiheke is a beautiful, educational island.

The Shire

If there are any Tolkien fans in the family, this is a must-see. The Shire was constructed just outside Auckland for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. Fortunately, these sets and homes were preserved and maintained by locals. Younger children will love the pint-sized houses, while older children, who may have seen at least one of the movies, will be excited to see it come to life.
