4. Don’t be afraid to ask for a few music recommendations provided by the locals you meet. You never know, they may expose you to your new favorite genre of music!
5. There is nothing quite like a good music festival. With amazing venues and bands, see if any festivals are playing somewhere near you during your travels.

2. If there happens to be a local college nearby, check their student performance calendar. It’s nice to enjoy up and coming musical talent. Think Julliard, The Colburn School, or Curtis Institute of Music. There are so many wonderful schools they can’t possibly all be listed here. But with some legwork, you’ll easily find an amazing opportunity to hear innovative musicians play.
3. Does the smaller town you’re visiting have a local chamber orchestra? If so, it’s likely they have innovative programming. This could be a chance to hear some pieces that aren’t traditionally played.
4. Speaking of a chamber atmosphere, how about seeking a local choir group? For instance, if you’re traveling to Austin, Texas experiencing a concert filled with voices of Conspirare will take your breath away! And choirs aren’t unique to the Lonestar state, take some time to find one near your travels.
5. Check the local philharmonic schedule. Many times there are special seasonal and holiday events that are very fun to attend.
