‘Talk the Talk’ is our new series, in which we cover the basic phrases you’ll need to be able to speak when traveling to another country. For our first installment, we’ve laid out some fundamental French words and phrases, along with the phonetic pronunciation.

Pronounced: wee, seel voo play/nong, mair-see

3. Hello/good morning/afternoon
Bonjour, (madame/monsieur)
Pronounced: bong-zhoor, (mah-dahm/mer-syer)

4. Hello/good evening
Bonsoir (madame/monsieur)
Pronounced: bong-swahr, (mah-dahm/mer-syer)

5. Goodbye
Au revoir
Pronounced: oh ruh-vwar

6. Excuse me
Pronounced: ex-kewzay mwah

7. Do you speak English?
Est-ce que vous parlez anglais?
Pronounced: essker voo pahrlay ahng-glay

8. Can you help me?
Est-ce que vous pouvez m’aider?
Pronounced: essker voo poovay may-day

9. Where is…?
Où est…?
Pronounced: oo ay

10. How much?
Pronounced: kong-byang

11. What’s that?
Qu’est-ce que c’est?
Pronounced: kisser say

12. What is your name?
Comment vous appellez-vous?
Pronounced: kom-mohn voo-za-peh-lay voo

13. I don’t understand
Je ne comprends pas
Pronounced: jhuhn kom-prohn pah

14. Please speak slowly
Parlez lentement
Pronounced: par-lay lehn-ta-mohn
